381 Lafayette Street: A Historic and Artistic Landmark
New York, NY
381 Lafayette Street stands as a vital piece of lower Manhattan's history and the enduring legacy of renowned artist Robert Rauschenberg. Adopted by Rauschenberg in 1965 as his residence and studio, the building now serves as the headquarters for the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, facilitating its residency programs, gallery exhibitions, nonprofit collaborations, and archival efforts.
SCCS Group served as trusted design and construction advisors to the Foundation, providing comprehensive pre-construction and construction oversight. Key elements of the project included:
Restoration of the Landmarked Historic Façade: Preserving the building’s architectural significance while meeting stringent historical standards.
Major MEP Upgrades: Enhancing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to improve building efficiency and safety.
Interior Renovations: Upgrading the building's interiors to support modern operational needs, while meticulously protecting original architectural details.
Throughout the project, special attention was given to safeguarding the health and safety of the existing staff at the Foundation’s headquarters. SCCS Group’s thoughtful approach ensured that the restoration not only respected the building's historical and artistic importance but also upheld the mission and values of Rauschenberg’s enduring legacy.
