Chestnut Commons
A Vision for Growth and Sustainability
New York, NY
Located at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Chestnut Street, Chestnut Commons is one of the first developments under the East New York Neighborhood Plan, bringing to life a long-held dream of the East New York and Cypress Hills communities. This transformative project fosters both economic and social growth.
The 14-story building offers 275 affordable housing units for formerly homeless and low-income households. Residents enjoy an array of thoughtful amenities, including a state-of-the-art community lounge with a full kitchen opening to a second-floor courtyard, a fitness center, bike storage, 24-hour security, a rooftop garden, laundry facilities, a courtyard, and free Wi-Fi. Designed and built to Passive House Standards and NYC Active Design Guidelines, Chestnut Commons promotes healthy and sustainable living.
Setting a benchmark for sustainability, Chestnut Commons is among the first developments to implement a zero-waste program. The building features a biodigester to aid residents in composting and a baler system for recycling. The biodigester produces organic fertilizer, which supports vegetable growth in the rooftop garden, aligning with the development's commitment to environmental stewardship and community wellness.
